Function & Volumes LAVI

Left Atrial Volume Index

Left atrial volume normalised to body surface area. A structural marker of chronic diastolic dysfunction and a key HFpEF diagnostic criterion.

LAVI is calculated by indexing the maximum left atrial volume (measured at end-systole) to body surface area, expressed in mL/m². Normal LAVI in adults is ≤34 mL/m² (ASE / EACVI 2016 diastolic-function recommendations).

A persistently elevated LAVI reflects long-standing elevation of LV filling pressures and is one of the four structural / functional pillars of HFpEF diagnosis (alongside elevated E/e’, elevated PASP, and LV hypertrophy).

Manual LA volume tracing is operator-dependent; AI-derived LAVI from a complete TTE is more reproducible and supports consistent serial follow-up.
