Cardiac Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging of the heart, known clinically as echocardiography (or "echo"). The first-line, radiation-free test for cardiac structure and function.

Cardiac ultrasound and echocardiography are the same examination. High-frequency sound waves image the beating heart in real time, with no ionizing radiation. "Echocardiogram" is simply the clinical term for an ultrasound scan of the heart, distinguishing it from ultrasound of other organs such as the abdomen, obstetric, or vascular systems.

A standard study captures 2D and Doppler images through the chest wall (transthoracic echocardiography) and yields measurements of chamber size, wall thickness, valvular function, and systolic and diastolic performance. It is the most-ordered cardiac imaging test worldwide and the entry point for evaluating heart failure, valvular disease, cardiomyopathies, and pulmonary hypertension.
