For over a year, cardiologists and ultrasound technicians at Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis Assen (WZA) have been working with artificial intelligence in echocardiography. The experience has been positive enough that WZA has now decided to continue this approach, signing a multi-year agreement with Us2.ai, the supplier of the technology.

This renewal confirms WZA's continued position as one of the first hospitals in the Netherlands, alongside Erasmus MC, to apply AI in echocardiography as part of standard clinical practice.

What began as an innovation within the Hart voor Elkaar transformation programme has developed into valuable daily support for cardiologists and ultrasound technicians. Us2.ai's AI software assists healthcare professionals in taking measurements, analysing images and drafting reports. The final clinical assessment always remains in the hands of the cardiologist.

In a video accompanying the announcement, cardiologist Dr. Jacco Karper explains how the initiative developed and what it means for daily practice at WZA.

"AI supports the process," Dr. Karper explains, "but never replaces the medical judgement of the healthcare professional."

The use of AI in echocardiography at WZA reflects what is possible when healthcare professionals are given the space to develop, test and apply new ideas in practice. It is a clear example of how innovation, when given the right conditions, can grow into standard, sustained clinical care.

Us2.ai is proud to continue this partnership with WZA and grateful for their trust in extending the agreement for the years ahead!
